Introduction

Hi! I am a science tutor and I am transgender. It’s the best of times and the worst of times to be trans. We’ve never had more legal rights and yet we’re the target of endless media transphobia. Young members of the LGBTQIA+ banner of identities feel safer coming out than ever before, but we know that for many students, school is not a safe please to live your truth. With all that in mind, I thought it might be an idea to offer online tutoring to LGBTQIA+ students, who may enjoying learning in a more affirming environment.

My professional background

I was a school teacher for several years, before leaving and setting up a tutoring business. I am DBS checked with QTS (qualified teacher status) and have now been helping young people to learn science for more than fifteen years. You’ll notice that I’m not sharing my name or credentials on this site, but all such details will be made available should you pursue lessons with me. If you contact me I will arrange a short online interview, where I would meet the student and at least one parent or guardian. During the interview, as well as finding out about your background and individual educational needs, I will share all of my relevant certification and identification. All of these measures are designed to safeguard all parties.

How lessons would work

My plan is to provide group lessons for a maximum of four students per one-hour session. Learning is interactive so it will make a nice atmosphere to have a few students along with myself, the tutor. If there is sufficient demand for the service as described, I will charge £15 for each one-hour lesson. I will only be offering lessons in science, all three sciences up to GCSE level (biology, chemistry, physics) or A-level lessons in chemistry. I am experienced with providing group lessons for some high profile organisations, details of which I will again share during the first online meeting.
